What are some reasons that may have led people into homelessness and may possibly keep them there? Have you met with a homeless or recovering-homeless person and have their story to tell?

I have many thoughts to share on this subject, and I'll write more here soon. But I'll say that I have some ideas about preventing homelessness spawned from not only mistakes we made in working with teen runaways on the streets, but also my work today as a family counselor, where I now have the sweet opportunity to sit with young people in my office BEFORE they become homeless (runaways, street kids, etc.) and perhaps to affect change in their families to prevent this drastic of an outcome.

I've written more on this at my blog on www.thebarefootlegend.com and will add more here soon...

For now I'll say that I'm a believer... prevention is where it's at, because once they're on the streets, that's a whole different story. For THOSE stories, I've compiled details from the beautiful, tragic, and inspiring lives of several homeless street kids in The Barefoot Legend. There are many reasons why someone may become homeless. Many are dishearted by loss of finances, a divorce, born into poverty, runaways, and those that have some kind of mental challenge or other disability and are not able to hold down a job. I have always had a heart for the homeless, especially those that stand along the road with signs that say "will work for food". I prayed one day that I would love to help someone like that. About 3 years ago I was in a hurry driving ,having many errands to do and a schedule to keep. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a man standing by the interstate with a sign. My heart went out but I prayed, "God, why now? I have so many things to do!" Then it hit me, I will help only when it is convenient for me! WOW, that was an eye-opener. I immediately turned around. Went into Wendy's and bought a big chili and a big coffee for him and gave it to him. I apologized to him for my thoughts and witnessed to him. The smile and tears in his eyes said it all. We have only what the grace of God gives us.

I think Sheila said it beautifully. I have had so many similar experiences, seeing someone on the streetcorner, and feeling that nudge, and then either analyzing them, or my own resources, or the timing, or whatever, and coming up with reasons not to give.

Isaiah 58:7 "I want you to share your food with the hungry... if you do these things, God will shed his own glorious light upon you."

I am constantly having to learn not to overthink situations, but just respond with generosity, and share what I have with others.

2 Cor 9:8 "God is able to make it up to you by giving you everything you need and more so that there will not only be enough for your own needs, but plenty left over to give joyfully to others."
